Unexpected Journey

Assalamualaikum guys,

So today I wanna share my personal experience which happen last night with you guys. I know I should be studying right now but why bother, right? 3rd of May had been one of my most memorable day ever. It was like dreams come true and yeah up until now, I still can’t believe on what happened to me last night. I don’t know whether this will be a long post or not but just bear with me, okay?

Before I start telling you my stories and experiences, I just want to tell you guys that I am not the one who can study at my own room and hostels. I don’t know, it’s just that maybe I will feel pressurised by all of those people arounds me, maybe. I prefer to study alone, in public where nobody knows me there. So, basically during the past week of my study week, I studied at a lot of places including Secret Recipe, Starbucks, Shell and many more. Some of you guys might think that I am too choosy and picky in studying but I tell you what, for me, the conducive surroundings is really vital for me to concentrate on what am I reading. We are all have our own different types of studying, right?

Okay so here we goes, as I mentioned to you before, I love to study at random places and yesterday, I studied at one of my senior’s house. I went there after Asar and stay there to study. Suddenly after Isya’ , he called one of his friends to discuss something about their study group and all stuffs. To make things short, they finally agreed to go to hospital on that night at 2130. Btw, my senior is a clinical year student who currently on O&G posting. (You guys can google what O&G means if you don’t know). My senior, emmm let’s call him “W” he invited me to come along with him to the hospital on that night because initially, they (W and his friends) kinda have a mission of palpating the abdomen of the mothers like 5 times a day.

Upon arrival of the hospital, we straight away go to the Obstetrics ward located at the fourth floor. On this floor, they have 4 wards (if i’m not mistaken), Labour rooms and OT (Operational Theatre). So, we finally met with W’s friends and they started to clerk a patient. In order for you to do some physical examination towards someone, you must have his/her history first, then you can do any physical examination related to it. After a brief of moment clerking the patient, we were really disappointed when the patient refuses to give her consent to palpate her abdomen (i was really sad at that moment tbh). But it’s okay, life must go on 😂

This thing is called “pinard” use to hear the fetal heart sound

Then, we started to wandering around the wards hoping that we can find any patient who are still awake for us to palpate their abdomen. Unlucky us, most of the mother already slept and yes, the mission to like palpating 5 abdomen day ......... failed ☹️ After realising that we don’t have the opportunity to do that, we just proceed to the labour room to see if there is any patient who are about to give birth. Before we went to the labour room, W met his other friends who had already done the O&G posting there for the past 4 weeks, so W asked a lot of things regarding the management and systems there because W is still new to the wards at this hospital. W’s friends showed us all the things, the do’s and don’ts in the ward, labour room and all that. It’s just like an orientation day btw. hahaha. So, we like take a lot of our time doing the “orientation” at that time.

We then went to the labour room. At the labour room, you need to wear the blue hospital scrubs because it’s the law, lol. So we changed our clothes and start wandering around the labour room. Deep down in my heart, I really really hope to see a normal delivery that night, at least one. So we wait and walk around, I watched a few procedures done by the HO, alhamdulillah I learnt a lot of new medical terms, new medical abbreviations regarding OnG last night. I feel blessed to be there. At 2330 o’clock, all of W’s friends already want to go back to their hostel and yes, there is still no signs of patient who will deliver at that time. I was kind of disappointed at that time but W told me that, he wanted to wait until we got to see at least one deliver.

The “blue hospital” shirt

There is this one patient (I will alter a bit of the information here in order to respect the privacy of the patient), whose Os is already at 5cm when we arrived the labour room and to be reviewed back at 0100 o’clock. We are hoping for that patient to deliver at 0100. We waited patiently until 0100. Oh before that, this patient already has thin meconium stain in her liquor (the baby already defecate in the uterus) which makes it more serious. At 0100, the HO do some reviews to this patient and she found out that the Os was still at 5cm. She then called her MO and her MO also confirmed the same thing. They quickly suggested and planned for the patient to undergoes EMLSCS (Emergency Lower Segment Cesarean Section) because they worried that the baby will swallow the faeces and will affect the baby’s lung. So the patient must undergoes that surgery because of Poor progression.

W and I were so excited that we can get to see the Cser and for me, I am more than over the cloud nine to have this opportunity to watch it live, with my own eyes. We quickly went to the OT to change our clothes to the OT scrub. Alhamdulillah we got to watch what happened before the surgery happened. I can say it was such a beautiful orchestra as everybody fills in their role to prepare the patient. Everyone moves smoothly and did their job perfectly. I found it amazingly beautiful and I
was amazed. At 0200, the operation started and it took only 15 minutes for the surgeon to take the baby out. When the surgeon wanted to close up the patient, she asked us “What is the abdominal layer regarding to Cesarean Section?” Hahahaha. Luckily, we can answer the even though we got some errors here and there. The operation finished at 0300 and yeah I don’t feel sleepy at all during that time maybe because of adrenaline rush and all that. Lol.

After exiting the OT, we went back to the labour room and guess what, the HO in charge told us that, when we are leaving to the the OT there is one patient who has the SVD (Spontaneous Vaginal Delivery) just right after we went to the OT. We are so sad to know that because it’s like the main
reason why we  stayed in the first time. Lol. But yeah, I don’t have rezeki to watch it but I got to have a more good opportunity which is the C-sec. At the end of the day, we planned but Allah is the Best
planner, right?

So at 0320, I booked the grab and went back home right after that. It was really an unforgettable experience and moments that I wish I don’t want to forget, forever. That’s why I wrote it here to keep it and I can read it all over again when I miss it. Alhamdulillah, I am so extremely grateful to Allah for this chance and knowledge that I got all night long which insyaAllah will helps me to become a more better and safe doctor in the future, Aminn.

P/s : Don’t tell others about all of this post okay and yeah I have 9 days left before my first professional exams. Do pray for us, Amin

Thank you so much guys for reading my post, Fake it till you make it, xoxo.
